Female celebrities are subject to certain social expectations. They are evaluated on every aspect of their appearance, including their weight, age, face, and most definitely their hair. Female celebrities are scrutinized for their appearances far more than male celebrities are.
However, there has been a significant change in the way that women are discussed over the past few years. Similar to how the 1960s were a period of female empowerment, female icons today can dress however they want without encountering as much negative public opinion as in the past.
No matter how their bodies or hair may look, more and more women in the spotlight are being praised. Some women have gone to extreme lengths to try to change how the public perceives them, such as pop star Miley Cyrus, who chopped off all of her hair in 2012 to establish herself as more than just a Disney Channel sensation.
Some celebrities chop off their hair to demonstrate how dedicated they are to a certain role, while others do it to embrace their uniqueness. It’s likely that both factors contributed to Game of Thrones actress Natalie Dormer’s iconic haircut for her 2014 appearance in The Hunger Games trilogy. However, even though it seems like a recent trend, women shaving their heads has long been a form of self-expression.
You May Not Know How Old This Trend Is
Even as far back as the 1960s, women have made the decision to shave their heads. In London, women started deliberately going bald as a form of defiance, particularly against the working class.
The punk rock movement naturally adopted the shaved-head appearance as it came to represent rebellion. It began to gain more traction in the 1980s and 1990s. A few figures in popular culture came to represent the style, such as singer Sinead O’Connor or actress Robin Tunney in the 1995 film Empire Records.
What Triggers The Trend?
The world over, hair is regarded as a prized possession. Luxurious hair typically represents youth, vitality, and frequently sexiness. However, the ideal and expectation of beauty that society has placed on women is occasionally an unreachable standard.
Many females would prefer to follow their own path and regain control of their image. The motivation for some is undoubtedly to not fit in with a society that constantly judges people based on their appearance. Hollywood and the entertainment industry have increased their scrutiny of female appearance.
Hollywood Hair Pressure
Hollywood celebrities are well aware of the strains involved in maintaining control of their manes. As reporters and paparazzi would love nothing more than to catch a celebrity with a bad hair day, stylists are kept very busy. Some well-known women decide it’s simpler to get their hair cut than to manage it for the endless photos.
There are many female A-listers who chose to go hairless, and the style is more popular than you might think. Here is a list of some female entertainment industry stars who have chosen to sport shaved heads:
